At the center of the captivating rolling meadows, resided a shepherd boy. His existence was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to tend to his flock of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind across the single tree on the mountaintop were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a sense of tranquil contentment.

But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plot.

Narratives of wild beasts preying on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.

One afternoon he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a check here wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
